Mykhailo Bulhakov
Mykhailo Bulhakov – a writer and the author of the books which have been read by several generations: "The Master and Margarita", "The White Guard" and a number of plays. The films shot long after the writer's death were known nationwide. Mykhailo Bulhakov was born in Vozdvizhenka area, during his childhood and in his youth he lived at 13 Andriivskyi Uzviz where nowadays you can find the Museum of Bulhakov Family.
"In the spring time the gardens were blooming white…a beautiful city, a happy city."
He loved this city till the end of his days. He left Kyiv, changed his profitable career of the doctor for the miserable existence of the writer. He consistently was rejected in publishing his works since during the Civil War he served as a medical worker within the White Army. He understood perfectly well that the Soviet regime would not forgive that and he hoped to get lost in crowded Moscow. But even being separated from the native city he "settled" all his characters on Kyiv hills, among Kyiv trams. It probably hurt that much that he never called Kyiv by its name - just City, from capital letter.
Almost all well-known novels by Mykhailo Bulhakov were published posthumously. They found their readers only during Khrushchov Thaw, nearly in two decades after their creator's death. They immediately became a sort of password for intellectuals of 60-ies. You could recognize the insiders by Bulhakov's quotes: "just chilling – fixing kerosene stove" ("sydzhu, nikoho ne chipaiu – prymus pochyniaiu"), "sword will disappear but stars will remain" ("mech znykne - a zirky zalyshatsia").
In the late 80-ies the writer came back to his beloved city. On Andriivskyi Uzviz, in the house where he spent all his childhood, they founded Mykhailo Bulhakov Museum. There you can find tours following the routes of his characters. His books are still published and read. Probably because as the Master wrote himself ''Manuscripts don't burn".
